History

“Nothing stops you…you can do it all” Lydia Darham,
Honorary Life President of Women In Business Gibraltar.

Women in Business Gibraltar was set up in the 1990´s by Lydia Darham and Dr Diane Sloma, under the name “The Gibraltar Business Network”.

After many years travelling and working abroad, Lydia returned to Gibraltar in the 1980´s, at a time when many new businesses were entering the Gibraltar economy, and women were beginning to penetrate into the higher echelons of the professional arena. Lydia wanted to create an alternative to the male dominated Chamber of Commerce, where she remembers speaker Joe Gaggero addressing the diners as “Gentlemen, and Lydia”. A passionate champion of women´s networking, she looked to Women 2000, an international organisation for working women, for inspiration. In a period when it was assumed that working mothers would not be able to travel, she networked extensively on a European level, and recalls the European Union’s Development Conference in Oporto as a major learning experience.

The GBN supported many causes, including the abolishment of estate duty, and the equal responsibility of women as jurors in the judicial system.

In 2013, the Gibraltar Business Network re-launched itself as “Women in Business Gibraltar”, with a fresh logo and website, thanks to one of our members: Gerry Martinez. Today the association is proud to have over 100 members of business and professional women from diverse sectors.
